Choosing Bathroom Faucets Wisely - Page 2

Recently, vessel sinks have gained wide acceptance among many homeowners. A vessel sink sits on top of the bathroom counter rather than being sunk into it like a vanity sink. To be functionally correct and visually pleasing, vessel sinks require specifically designed bathroom faucets. Bathroom faucets for this type of sink are called vessel fillers. They are longer and/or taller to better fit with and fill the sink. Many vessel fillers have very dramatic angles or swoops that serve to accent the unusual character of a countertop sink.

Conventional sinks remain the norm in most homes but no less attention should be given to their faucets. A bathroom faucet found in a heavily trafficked multi-use family bathroom will need to be much sturdier than one found in a lightly used guest powder room. Thought might also be given to the height of a faucet, which will be used by a wide variety of hands. Tall crook-shaped bathroom faucets have found increasing favor in multiple-use bathrooms. This type of faucet adapts easily to washing hands as well as to other sink uses such as filling bowls and cleaning tools or shoes. Vanity areas that are used by only one or two adults or by guests lend themselves to more delicate designs, which may not stand up to rough extended use.

Bathroom faucets have also recently seen several upscale functional innovations. In one popular design, the top of the faucet body has been cut away, thus making the flow of the water visible. As the water moves along the fixture’s channel, the faucet itself changes color from blue to red depending upon the temperature of the water running through it. More widely used improvements include bathroom faucets with water softening and/or fluoridating systems. A development that might be of specific interest for family faucets is the anti-scald guard unit.
