Bathroom Sinks

The first bathroom sinks were actually located in the bedroom as the bathroom hadn’t yet been invented. The pitcher and bowl served as the first bathroom sink and it usually sat on a table in the bedroom. It was used for washing or freshening up. Bathroom sinks have come a long way since then. Interestingly enough, when the bathroom sink was born, many people built highly crafted cabinets in order to hide the facilities, which today would be considered elaborate cabinetry.

Bathrooms have become more than just a water closet. We have radios and CDs in our showers and magazine racks made just for the bathroom. We have saunas and whirlpools and more cabinet space than yesterday’s kitchens ever thought about having. We have two bathrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, three bathrooms. Bathrooms are not the hide-away-in-the-closet rooms they started out to be.

The early bathroom sinks were made of tin or aluminum and when porcelain came along, it was only for the wealthy. Today’s bathroom sinks are made of porcelain, plastic, glass, stainless steel, stone, marble, granite, copper and nickel plate. They are round, square, oval, rectangular, scalloped and other shapes. Bathroom sinks are also fashioned in the shape of a shell or even a flower petal. They’re not just round or square anymore. There are pedestal sinks, sinks attached to the wall, sinks built into a cabinet—usually referred to as a lavatory—sinks mounted under the counter, sinks without a counter and antique sinks.

As a result, bathroom sinks have become as much of a fashion statement as the dining room table or sofa. They don’t come cheap, either. A fashionable vessel sink goes for more than $300 while some of the antique bathroom sinks are selling for more than $5,000.

Glass sinks are quite stylish and come in different shapes and sizes. Stainless steel sinks won’t chip and are easy to clean. Stone sinks (granite, marble and onyx) are the most durable. There are even wood sinks. They all have different cleaning suggestions depending on the material but it is generally suggested that you don’t use an abrasive material to clean any bathroom sink.
